What's Behind that Name ...

Arroyo Ciervo

Spanish for Elk Stream. Named on Ciervo Mountain 7.5" quadrangle. This name is continued from Alta California, maybe even earlier. The name reflects the fact that elk once roamed this area in great numbers. According to Elliot, the elk were mercilessly killed by hunters simply for the "fun" of the killing. The elk were pretty much gone by 1854.
