What's Behind that Name ...

Cascara Spring

Located south of Condon Peak at N36° 18.002; W120° 37.465 at 3564 feet. This good water spring is named for the California Buckthorn (Rhamnus californica) that grow there. Cascara is short for Cascara sagrada, which is Spanish for "sacred bark." This is also commonly known as coffeeberry.

The dried bark of the Cascara is used as a laxative by California Native Americans. The bark must dry for at least a year before using it as the freshly dried bark produces too strong a laxative for safe use.
