Chilano CampLocated above Idria and below the Idria water reservoir at N36° 24.266; W120° 40.512 at 3696 feet. This feature is not shown on any maps and it is commonly referred to by many locals as Mexican Flat. The name Mexican Flat is erroneous. The feature should actually be called Chilano Camp. This confusion and because of the phonic similarities of "China" and "Chilano" accounts for the idea that Chinese miners also used this area. It is properly called Chilano Camp because a group of thirteen Chilean families lived there in the late 1800s. They came here from the Almaden mine near Santa Clara, California and were primarily employed as wood cutters for the New Idria mine and other mines in the area . Ignacio O. Nuñez, called Dude, was born here. Dude once boasted that he had cut every tree, bush and shrub from the summit of Wright Mountain (around 1900) and left the mountain top completely barren.
