What's Behind that Name ...

Laguna Mountain

Spanish for lagoon. This mountain is not shown on an 1891 map, but appears in 1907 as Lookout Mountain. It appears as Laguna Mountain on a 1924 map of San Benito County. The current name is derived from Laguna Ranch that began operating in the area in the 1870s. Laguna Mountain is thought by some to be an ancient volcano. The remains of the old Laguna Ranch are within the caldron of this extinct volcano. There is also a small spring fed natural lake or laguna, within this caldron for which the ranch is named. The summit is at N36° 20.348; W120° 48.507 at 4488 feet.
