What's Behind that Name ...

Sweetwater Spring

Named on Hepsedam Peak 7.5' quadrangle at N36° 21.214; W120° 51.105 at 3099. This name comes from the fact that the water from this spring taste sweet. This is one of the most productive and reliable springs in the area, producing good water throughout the year. A small stream flows from this spring and crosses the road near Lorenzo Vasquez' old cabin site.

We don't know when this name first came into use, we know the name is in use 1870 because it is mentioned in the Mathews Diary. It was probably named something like Agua Dulce by the Spanish. Because the spring is so reliable, it was likely an important watering hole for Natives long before the arrival of the Spanish. Some people settled at Sweetwater Spring in July 1870 intending to construct a hotel and grocery there.
